Music for the masses
At this point I have a request for our fans. If any of you in any way hate homosexuals, people of different color, or women, please do this one favor for us — leave us the fuck alone! Don’t come to our shows and don’t buy our records. –Kurt Cobain
In this manual you will learn that there is good and bad music, and that you may become very successful by making good or even great music.
Please understand that this does not mean that you will have to dislike or hate bad music, or even the people who like bad music. Also note that good or bad art has nothing to do with gender, sexual orientation, race, or even taste.
This manual shall not support sexism, racism, homophobia, or bigotry of any kind.
There has always been good and bad art by the way, and there have always been people who liked either good or bad music, or even both at the same time. Diversity is one of mankind’s strengths, and we should be glad that there are people with different tastes and different likes and dislikes. Everyone’s different, and even if you will learn that only certain people will ever like good or even great music, then this does not mean that you will have to dislike or even fight people that will not like the kind of music you’ll be doing.
Our plan will be to revive great music, but this does not mean that you should waste your time fighting bad music.
Accept the fact that not all people are the same, and that not all people will like the same things.
Parents and schools should place great emphasis on the idea that it is all right to be different. Racism and all the other ’isms’ grow from primitive tribalism, the instinctive hostility against those of another tribe, race, religion, nationality, class or whatever. You are a lucky child if your parents taught you to accept diversity. –Roger Ebert
The masses out there are listening to bad music, just the way the masses prefer McDonalds, watch reality TV, or even voted for Donald Trump or for the Brexit. The masses like all kinds of crap, this has been true in the past, and it will be true in future. You will never be able to change this, and changing this won’t even be necessary. Don’t condemn those people (except those who voted for Trump or for the Brexit maybe), as this is just the way they are, and everyone should be allowed to follow his or her own path.
If you want great music to return to the main stage, then this does not mean that bad music will have to disappear.
All people are different, and all people will like different kinds of music. If you will be making great music for people who really appreciate art, then this does not mean that other people should not be allowed to listen to other kinds of music, even if this will then be terribly bad music.
We don’t need to get rid of bad music if we want great artists to become successful again.
Don’t try to force people to change the way they are. And if you really want to change the way people think, if you want to change the world, then you’ll first have to focus on the those who are open-minded, the ones who are leaders. If you manage to turn those people into fans, then others will follow.
Don’t waste your time and / or energy whining about the current situation or fighting bad stuff – focus on producing some great alternative instead!
